Australia

15th February

Waking up late again it still took us a while to get up and ready. Having sharing a bathroom we missed the slot but, this got us talking to our dorm mate. He told us he pays his rent by playing keyboard on the streets of fortitude valley for the drunks after having bought the gear second hand. He then disappeared from the room and we headed outside.

As it was brilliant sunshine we decided to check out an area we’d been told was a must see by our taxi share man. He told us along the river over the bridge is a place known as south bank and its very ‘chill’. On looking at google maps before we left, we realised we could get to it through the same mall we already know about and over one of two bridges.

At this point it had become the hottest part of the day and I’d had no coffee so a pit stop was needed.

An espresso coffee which was horrible and lunch in a cute riverside cafe.

Fully satisfied we continued on, wishing we could be near the sea as the humidity was quite bad. The cool breeze on the bridge and that all too good photo just couldn’t be resisted.

Arriving at south bank it looked like a family friendly park area with a few touristic activities to do as thus we chilled for 30 minutes in the sun.

On one side of the green were multiple paths you couldn’t see an end to. On closer inspection one said a sign to South Banks jungle and so I dragged Josh in. This path led to a boardwalk through more jungle trees, it was very pretty but, this point we were hot, thirsty and longing for some shade.

As I said before all we could hear were cicadas. No snakes or spiders yet though, only lizards.

Well what did we know! We emerged into a large expanse of area with restaurants and an inshore lagoon beach. Thinking it’s too good to be true we sat down on the sand to snooze in the shade. I wandered off and came across some ice creams however, Josh found Fanta slushes which were even better than the Calippos. This was the day we realised we had hit Australian temperatures and we were struggling with the humidity more than previously thought.

After this we walked back to the hostel, passed Woolworths for a food shop and cooked our first meal (boring pasta) in the hostel. That kitchen was so hot and greasy we couldn’t wait to get out to finish our night with drinks at the club. 10 dollars for a jug of beer!

One happy man!
